Sprechen Cinema: Metropolis
Sprechen music presents a new way of experiencing the Giorgio Moroder edit of Fritz Lang’s sci-fi classic Metropolis with a reimagined soundtrack mixed live by Chris Massey and Richard Ward featuring music by Autechre, Four Tet, Le Matos, Aphex Twin, Lee Gamble, Abul Mogard, Memorex Memories and many more alongside specially composed soundscapes by Chris and Richard exclusive to this performance.
Following sell out performances of Sprechen Cinema’s first reimagined soundtrack project, F.W. Murnau’s horror clas-sic Nosferatu, Chris and Richard selected Metropolis as their next project. The futuristic nature of the film made it a natural choice given their extensive and deep knowledge of electronic music. The film inspired them to dig deep into their personal collections to find exceptional pieces of music by some of the most exciting & forward thinking producers past and present as well as artists from the music label Sprechen. Innovating further, Chris and Richard have produced sound pieces to enhance the emotional impact of key moments in the film.
The future vision of Metropolis inspired the duo to fully explore their love of electronic music, going beyond the dance floor to curate a soundtrack of otherworldly atmospheres that take the viewer deeper into the visual world created by Fritz Lang. Adopting a different tone to Nosferatu (which demanded a more sense of foreboding horror) there was scope for more machine lead and stripped back tones to match Metropolis’s air of dystopian menace where the dread of a mechanical futuristic society required a deeper sinister rhythmic pulse with contrasting moments of euphoria and doom.
The result is an immersive and emotional experience that pulls the viewer deeper into the films vision of the future, a vision that still has relevance to a modern day audience who will recognise the key themes of one of the greatest and influential films ever made.PT1H30MPG2025-06-05Brigitte Helm
